An essential consideration in any sustainable build or renovation is the embedded carbon of the building materials used. In this session, we’ll provide insight into which building materials create the smallest carbon footprint, as well as outlining those to avoid where possible. In the second half of this session we’ll open up a panel discussion and Q&A session with our experts.

Please note that this session will start at 6:30pm (AEDT) and end between 8 - 8:30pm (AEDT), depending on audience questions. The session will be recorded and sent out to registered participants.

Speakers

David Mahony, HIP V. HYPE

David is the Head of Better Buildings at HIP V. HYPE, an ethical, socially conscious and environmentally focused property developer, sustainability consulting practice and work share provider. In his role Dave leads the technical delivery of environmental and health-based outcomes across buildings and infrastructure.

Elizabeth Wheeler, Future Focused Design

Elizabeth is a building designer and sustainable building adviser who focuses on reducing the environmental impact of residential building works. In 2022, Elizabeth’s design was awarded both the national and state prizes in the Design Matters True Carbon Zero Challenge. Omnia House rates 8.3 NatHERS stars in its optimal orientation and a minimum of 7.1 stars in other orientations; satisfies criteria for gold to platinum level livability; and would be carbon positive by 2050.

Host - Dr Rachel Goldlust, Renew

Dr Rachel Goldlust is working on Renew's Getting Off Gas Toolkit and campaign. She brings experience in environmental education, project management, facilitation and a range of writing, communication and presentation skills. Rachel has worked for community organisations, local governments, universities, and as a research assistant, contractor and consultant across history, planning and natural building. As an academic in the environmental humanities, she continues to research and publish on off-grid lifestyles and choices, alongside sustainable land use and housing.
