    Event description

Repujado are embossed tin ornaments and they're very recognisable in South American countries. In Spanish, it's called Hojalata - the Spanish word for tin. This embossing is a technique that involves stamping/punching material, that's cut or pierced into decorative works of art.

Repujado are fun and colourful, and can depict many different animals and symbols. But have you ever looked into their imagery and meanings?

In this class we're getting to know calaveras (skulls), learning about their meaning in relation to Día de Los Muertos while creating our own embossed tin likenesses.

Now is your chance to get hands-on and make your own embossed tin ornaments while learning about its cultural place across South American countries.

    What will we cover?

In this hands-on class we will explore:

    • Stories and mythologies of the skull symbol in tin decorations
    • How to work with tin
    • How to emboss using both sides of the tin, creating lines and patterns that indent inwards and push outwards
    • How to decorate and colour tin images
    • Make your own embossed tin ornaments!

    What should I bring?

    • Curiosity and willingness to learn more about Latin American cultures and histories.

    Who will be teaching?

Colibri Stories emerged in 2022 with the desire to respond to the recognition, appropriation and appreciation of our own history and culture. We expose others to these deep histories and cultures through creativity and curiosity made into art.

    Colibri Stories are:

Katherine (she/her) is a Colombian in love with her culture and roots. She is fascinated by being able to tell stories and leave a message to each person. Have a look at her events and workshops on their instagram.

Irma (she/her) loves to share her home country with viewers. She encourages everyone to immerse themselves in Mexican culture and art, through creativity. She wants to invite people to discover what lies beyond the other side of the world. Check her work out on instagram.
