International Women’s Day #EmbraceEquity is a celebration of women’s achievements, to raise awareness of something we need to think about, know and embrace. Equity means creating a fair and equal world. Poets play their part to actively support and embrace equity within their own sphere of influence.

Three women poets from a diversity and variety of voice, thought, place and poetic preoccupation will feature including: Sydney based New Zealand poet, Miro Bilbrough’s memoir of the counterculture, In the Time of the Manaroans (Ultimo Press, Victoria University Press), was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and has been hailed as ‘the best book of non-fiction published in New Zealand in 2020’; Daiane Moret, is a Brazilian born poet, performer and interdisciplinary artist and Michele Seminara, who is a writer, poet and editor.

Opening address provided by Sandy Edwards, a key figure in Australian photography, known widely for a deeply personal approach to documentary image making that focuses on the portrayal of women and Aboriginal communities. Her sensitive and evocative photographs are taken with an intuitive response to feelings, people and place. By considering the intersection of human lives she broadens the genre of portraiture to explore inter-relational themes such as trust, love and community.

The reading is part of the exhibition program by Damien Minton Presents Roslyn Sharp, The Messenger, a suite of photographs at the Sheffer Gallery.

Meet the poets:

Miro Bilbrough’s memoir of the counterculture, In the Time of the Manaroans (Ultimo Press, Victoria University Press), was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and has been hailed as ‘the best book of non-fiction published in New Zealand in 2020’. Miro teaches screenwriting and directing, and she has made award-winning films ‘Floodhouse’, ‘Being Venice’, ‘Bartleby’ and ‘Urn’. She has published poetry in Australasian journals, anthologies and apps, and in the poetry chapbook Small-time spectre’ (Kilmog Press); and her poem 'Spider silk' won second equal in the Val Vallis Award 2016.

Daiane Moret is a Brazilian born poet, performer and interdisciplinary artist. With a background in psychology and acting she reveals her internal world, desires and traumas through her words. She writes and performs with the jazz band Ally as well as a solo poet and performance artist with the Tabula Rasa collective. Her poetry has been published in Cordite, Belonging Mag, The Alphabet of Women Anthology and Epistolária, an anthology to be released in Brazil and Portugal. Dai, together with her team, won Bankstown Grand Slam in 2018. She has performed at Sydney Writers Festival, Vivid, Melbourne Spoken Word Festival, Story Fest, Poetica, International Women’s Jazz Festival, Devonport Jazz Festival, Poetic city, Erotica Film Festival, Mother Tongue, Enough Said.

Michele Seminara is a writer, poet and editor. She has published two chapbooks and two full-length poetry collections, her most recent being Suburban Fantasy (UWA Publishing, 2021). Michele has appeared as a panellist, performer and facilitator at numerous literary events and festivals Australia-wide, including Canberra Writers Festival, Newcastle Writers Festival and Queensland Poetry Festival.
