Event description

Join us at The Social Outfit for a workshop with embroidery masters - Mary Brown and Carolyn Pearce from The Embroiderer's Guild of NSW.

The Social Outfit collaborated with Mary and Carolyn for our "Earn and Learn" One-of-A-Kind Jacket Project, earlier this year.

In this 2 hour class, held above our retail store in Newtown, you’ll learn a variety of embroidery stitches, including surface stitching and beading techniques that will get you started or help you progress your embroidery journey!

All materials for the class will be provided, just bring yourself!

This workshop is offered by The Social Outfit as part of the Australian Design Centre's Craft Week 2022.

    ABOUT YOUR TEACHERS:

    Mary Brown:

Mary is currently an accredited tutor and judge for the Embroiderers' Guild of N.S.W. Inc and was a sessional lecturer in the Fashion and Textile Department at the University of Technology, Sydney from 2007-2017. In her own creative practice today, Mary works across many fields of embroidery, but in particular metal thread embroidery.

    Carolyn Pearce:

Carolyn has a BA Dip. Ed. and her teaching and writing skills are put to good use in workshops throughout Australia. She is also the convenor for the Guild's course in Silk Ribbon Embroidery. Carolyn Pearce has always been fascinated by fabrics, laces, threads and buttons. She learned to embroider 'properly' in the 1980s and was hooked.

    ABOUT THE SOCIAL OUTFIT

The Social Outfit is a fashion label with a difference. We believe in an Australia where refugees and new migrants are warmly welcomed and supported through a positive settlement experience.

Our social enterprise fashion label exists to provide employment and training to people from refugee and new migrant communities in clothing production, retail, design and marketing. Our training and employment model builds skills in a supportive environment, interacting with broader Sydney communities and producing ethical fashion that reflects a hopeful Australian spirit.
