Event description

EMERGING ARTIST CONCERT SERIES - Take a lunch break and hear some of Australia's leading young musicians perform live at St Jude's.

A performance series designed to connect our next generation of musicians with the community and make classical, jazz and world music more accessible to sections of the community who sometimes find attending live music difficult for reasons of time or cost.  In the Southern Highlands, the program is generously supported by St Jude's Music Association and private donors.
ENTRY is by donation, and we encourage people to pay what they can. Donations go to the St Jude's Music Association, an organisation committed to the sharing and making of live music in the Southern Highlands.

PROGRAM

Nino Rota - Divertimento Concertante

Nino Rota, one of the 20th century's most prolific and versatile composers, was renowned for blending traditional and modern musical elements seamlessly. His compositional style was characterised by lush melodies, intricate harmonies, and rhythmic vitality, often infused with a deep sense of lyricism and emotional depth. With its delightful melodies, rhythmic vivacity, and brilliant orchestration, Rota's Divertimento Concertante for Double Bass continues to captivate audiences, inviting them into a world of musical enchantment and virtuosic brilliance.

Vilmos Montag - Sonata in E minor for Double Bass - 1st and 2nd Movements

Vilmos Montag, a distinguished composer of the 20th century, was renowned for his profound understanding of instrumental nuances and his ability to craft evocative and technically demanding compositions. He is also famous for both his traditional classical compositions and film scores, including the 'Godfather' and many of Fellini's films. The Sonata in E Minor for Double Bass represents a compelling testament to the expressive depth and technical virtuosity achievable on the double bass. Composed with meticulous attention to the instrument’s unique tonal qualities, this sonata unfolds in a captivating dialogue between the soloist and the rich tapestry of harmonies the piano provides.

ADRIAN WHITEHALL completed his Bachelor of Music (Performance) in 2019 and, in 2022, a Master of Music Studies (Performance), both at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying under Kees Boersma.

In 2023, Adrian decided to move to Melbourne to study under Damien Eckersley at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and became an Emerging Artist for the Australian Chamber Orchestra with the mentorship of Principal Bass Maxime Bibeau.

Adrian has played with ensembles such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Australian Chamber Orchestra/ Education Programs, Ensemble Apex, Australian World Orchestra Chamber Ensemble, Moorambilla Voices and Steel City Strings. Adrian has also played with the Sydney Youth Orchestra, The Australian Youth Orchestra and ACO Academy as part of his training and education.

RACHAEL LIN is in demand as an associate artist,Rachael Lin is currently on faculty at Sydney Grammar School and Rising Stars at the Con, and is a member of the Hartley Trio, playing with Dr Evgeny Sorkin and Zoltán Zsabó.

Rachael's formative years were spent at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, from a Rising Stars student to BMus (Performance) graduate with First Class Honours. Despite having two left feet, she decided to train and work as a répétiteur for The Australian Ballet (2015-2017), collaborating with leading artists at major venues across Australia. However, the calling to make music with others and hone her craft was too strong, so Rachael ultimately left for postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music in London. Whilst a finalist in 2022’s Australian National Piano Award, Rachael has always been a passionate chamber musician, most recently on the Momentum Ensemble Tour and Moorambilla Voices programs. Away from the piano, she can be found searching for good food and coffee.

We respect and acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Dharawal Country, Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
