EMHS Clinical Ethics Symposium
Description
The symposium aims to generate interest in clinical ethical deliberation, building both capability and culture for a service that promotes collaborative ethical decision making in complex tertiary healthcare environments. Supported by the Clinical Ethics Society of Australasia (CESA) the symposium will draw on the knowledge and lived experience of recognised experts in the field, including Linda Sheahan, Cameron Stewart, and Anne Preisz.
The day will cover why clinical ethics services matter, what an effective service looks like, and how to design and implement this in a tertiary hospital setting. This will be facilitated through a morning lecture series covering the philosophical foundations of ethics - with practical tips to help turn theory into practice - the interface of ethics and health law, the extra challenges in paediatric healthcare, what an ethics service can do, and how building ethics capability positively contributes to organisational culture. Delegates will then get a chance to participate in a highly interactive, live clinical ethics deliberation of challenging cases, involving a panel of local and national ethics experts.
Ticket price includes morning tea, lunch, and networking opportunities.
Target audience:
- Multidisciplinary healthcare workers facing ethical dilemmas in their clinical practice (doctors, nurses, allied health).
- Healthcare executives tasked with deliberating on issues of ethical tension, including in the acute setting.
- Ideally, many delegates will be working in WA hospitals and clinical environments, with the day helping to foster local ethics interest & understanding.
