The cultural landscape of Western Australia has been profoundly shaped by émigré artists, sculptors, and architects who arrived throughout the 20th century, bringing with them diverse traditions, modernist perspectives, and a commitment to creative innovation. Displaced by war, political unrest, or the search for new opportunity, these visionaries enriched the state’s aesthetic and cultural identity, laying the foundations for a uniquely Western Australian modernism.

Émigré Modernism: Bauhaus to Brutalism is a major exhibition that celebrates this legacy, showcasing the transformative influence of émigré creatives between 1945 and 1975. From the bold colours of German-born painter Elise Blumann, to the sculptural forms of George Kosturkov and Peter Gelencsér, and the expressive architecture of Iwan Iwanoff, the exhibition traces how European avant-garde ideals were reinterpreted in dialogue with Western Australia’s light, landscape, and material culture.
Audiences will discover how émigré innovators bridged Bauhaus minimalism with the sculptural dynamism of Brutalism, forging an architectural and artistic identity for Perth that was globally informed yet distinctly local. Their contributions extend beyond the visual arts into performance, with figures like Madame Kira Bousloff, founder of the West Australian Ballet, shaping cultural institutions that remain vital today.
