250 WORDS – kids workshop with Emma Gourlay
Description
Local resident and writer-of-colour Emma Gourlay is a HarperCollins children's author who loves helping kids talk about new ideas.
Emma didn't have any contacts in publishing but got a two-book deal after pitching 250 words that summarised her first book, Kip of the Mountain.
This workshop teaches kids to sum up a big idea in a tiny way, and the emphasis is writing it down. (Emma was a shy kid and understands shy kids, so this is not a public speaking workshop!)
And guess what? Emma was at Words in Winter last year, so you might remember her, and she'd love to see you all again. Notebook, pen and great storytelling vibes are all supplied.
Suitable for ages 8–13 years old.
Words in Winter kids programs proudly sponsored by Springs Medical.

Meet Emma
Emma Gourlay was a wannabe-writer until she polished up her manuscript in Daylesford and sent it out with hope and a 250-word pitch. She signed with a big agency in London, then signed with HarperCollins, and has released two books, Kip of the Mountain and Kip of the Karoo. She writes with history and heart and loves talking about magical adventures.
