Event description

Based on the novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Sophia Franzella

Emma Woodhouse is clever, educated and energetic...and in imminent danger of going mad with idleness. In a time when respectable ladies are expected to sit quietly at home, she desperately needs projects--and prides herself on matchmaking, much to the chagrin of her friend Mr. Knightley. But where Emma's considerable energies focus, screwball comedy follows... A fresh feminist take on a treasured classic, Hamill's Emma breaks down convention, expectation, and even the fourth wall with vibrant comic flair--leading audiences "forward, onward, and upward!

Jane Austen turns 250 in 2025, and a party seems like the perfect way to honor her legacy and brilliance! Writer Kate Hamill has paid homage to Ms. Austen by taking her source material (Emma) and turning-up the dial with comedically-broader versions of her characters and a more contemporary, feminist point of view. For this play, we want you to come to the theatre as yourself, laugh and play together, and party like we once did before our world became soOOOOoOooO AllWorkNoPlay. Dress in your brightest colors, burn your metaphorical bras (or real ones), and know that you are *most definitely* welcome to this theatrical bash that Jane Austen deserved!
