‘IN CELEBRATION OF EMPATHY’ SYMPOSIUM - CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Dear Colleague,
The UTS Empathy Initiative research group will be hosting the Third Empathy Symposium in December 2022. This will be an exciting event that brings together healthcare educators, clinicians and researchers who are committed to better understanding the power of empathy to transform education and improve patient care.
The Symposium will include plenary speakers, oral and poster presentations exploring the relationship between empathy and patient care, and promoting practical strategies for enhancing and evaluating empathy in clinical and educational settings.
SYMPOSIUM DETAILS
Date: December 1 and 2, 2022
Time:
Day 1: 8:30am-2:00pm (registration from 8.15am)
Day 2: 8:30am-4:00pm
Location: Sofitel, Darling Harbour
Cost: $400 per person (for two days)
SYMPOSIUM THEMES
You are invited to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation addressing one of the following themes:
- Empathy in Practice - How empathy is enacted in healthcare practice, patient/client experiences and outcomes.
- The Evidence for Empathy - What the research shows – what we know and what we need to know.
- Education for Empathy - How education can foster empathy.
- The Power of Empathy - Empathy as a political movement that informs social justice.
- Codesign for Empathy - Codesign as a strategy to enhance empathy in action.
- Empathy in a time of Covid – Challenges and triumphs in providing empathic care during a global pandemic.
PRESENTATION FORMATS
Abstracts are invited for both posters and oral presentations of 20 minutes (inclusive of 5 minutes for questions).
ABSTRACT SPECIFICATIONS
An abstract of between 200-250 words, with no more than four references is required for both oral and poster presentations. Please submit as a Word document using Calibri size 11 font and 1.5 spacing.

Note: The first author will be the corresponding author and receive all correspondence from the Symposium Scientific Committee.
DECLARATION OF CONSENT
Authors who submit an abstract and present at the Symposium, agree to the following terms:
- My co-authors and I consent to publication of our abstract in the Symposium program.
- I understand that if my abstract for an oral presentation is not successful, I may be offered a poster presentation.
- Publication of my abstract will not infringe any copyright, intellectual property or third-party rights.
- If my abstract is accepted for an oral presentation, I understand that the scheduled presentation time cannot be amended.
- I will provide a short biography for use by the Symposium organisers when requested.
- I give permission for a photographer to be present during my presentation and for my photos to be published on the UTS Empathy Initiative website, newsletters or other promotional materials.

Abstracts must be submitted by close of business on September 30, 2022.
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
Please email abstracts to: Suzanne.Sheppard-Law@uts.edu.au with the words ‘Empathy Symposium Abstract’ in the email subject line.
Successfully submitted abstracts will be acknowledged by email.
Author's will be notified of their abstract status early October, 2022.
Once a paper is accepted, at least one of the authors must register and pay to attend the Symposium by November 1, 2022.
