Since 1 July 2024, new Australian Government laws have strengthened employer responsibilities when hiring migrant workers. Businesses must understand each worker's visa conditions and support ongoing compliance. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties and other consequences.

This information session will give employers and labour agencies practical guidance to stay up to date with the legislation, minimise legal risks, and maintain a fair, safe, and lawful workplace.

This topic covers:

Employer obligations under the Migration Act when hiring migrant workers.
Understanding and supporting workers' visa conditions.
How to avoid civil penalties and other legal consequences.
Best practice approaches for creating a compliant workplace.

This session is for suitable for small business owners and labour agencies responsible for employing migrant workers who want to understand their legal obligations and ensure compliance.

This session will be presented by Joshua Strutt, CEO and Principal Solicitor of the Immigration Advice & Rights Centre (IARC), who are an organisation dedicated to helping small business owners navigate the complexities of employing migrant workers and protecting their business operations.

Organised by the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) and Multicultural Workers Collective, this session provides practical, actionable advice for creating a lawful and safe workplace.
