Empowering women and girls in the Circular Economy

The rise of women in leadership and entrepreneurial roles demonstrates that business success can go hand-in-hand with sustainability. It requires a rebalancing between financial and other forms of capital (e.g. social, natural, and knowledge) and a wider framing of what constitutes success.

Studies have shown that women are more willing to alter their behaviour for the sake of the environment and the well-being of their families and wider communities and they are taking these views into the boardroom.

With global momentum driving a transition to a Circular Economy, the empowerment of women and girls will be a critical factor in the evolution to a low-carbon, inclusive and equitable economy.

Empowering women and girls in the Circular Economy will be hosted by Annie Jiang, and presented by Dr Nicole Garofano and Eloise Lobsey then it will be followed by a Q & A session.

Speakers:

Dr Nicole Garofano is the Head of Circular Economy Development for Planet Ark. In her role, Nicole is leading the ongoing strategic development of the Australian Circular Economy (ACE) Hub, the national reference platform for circular economy knowledge and collaboration in Australia.

For more almost 20 years, Nicole has worked in environmental education and action with a focus on waste management and more recently, circular economy. She has designed and managed community-based initiatives to increase sorting, collection and processing of a range of packaging materials, including plastic.

Nicole has a PhD from research focused on the plastic food and beverage packaging value chain, identifying both local and global innovation to improve chain activities and outcomes. Nicole is an Associate of the Australian Institute of Packaging.

Eloise Lobsey is the Regional Policy and Program Coordinator for Circular Economy at the Hunter Joint Organisation, a program focussed on coordinating the various ways in which local government can help drive the region’s transition to a circular economy.

Eloise is passionate systems thinker and circular design advocate who believes in the collective power of shifting to circular mindsets. She has 15 years of local government experience in NSW, Victoria and the UK, working across a range of environmental policy and programs areas including resource recovery, circular economy, food systems, behaviour change, placemaking, sustainable design and land use planning. Eloise is also a volunteer Director of the Circular Food Systems Non-For-Profit, Feedback Organic.

Annie Jiang is the CEO of Go Circular, a purpose driven organisation that focuses on a systemic approach to sustainability and circular economy. Annie is a systematic and strategic leader who believes every organisation has a role in the transition to a more circular economy and sustainability. Annie is an MBA Advisory Board at the University of Newcastle, Non-executive Director at Dantia, and Non-executive Director at Circular Economy Living Lab.
