Event description

What to expect:

En plein air translates from French to “in the open air.” It is the art of outdoor painting, capturing landscapes and views in natural light, and has been a popular practice for centuries. With so many of us spending the majority of our time indoors over the past few months, what better way to see the sun and create something beautiful!

Local artist Josephine Josephsen is kindly donating her time to help and encourage others to paint in the beautiful surrounds of The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability.

“You will find that painting en-plein air is very different from painting in the studio. Be prepared to work fast and give up including details. Don’t overthink it."
Josephine will be painting in gouache on a coloured mat A5 board, though attendees are encouraged to bring what they already own in terms of materials.

"I will start with a B&W sketch to decide on tone and composition."

"I try to develop a more impressionistic conclusion by working quickly and spontaneously.”

Josephine will be available for advice but generally, this will be a supported self-led session, exploring the ex-industrial beauty of The Coal Loader.
