    Event description

West Philly trombonist Dan Blacksberg presents a Sunday evening series of experimental music to get you energized for your week! Dan brings together musicians from across Philly’s musical spectrum and beyond for new improvised Encounters in Studio 34’s comfy and intimate space. Bring your ears and settle down into a couch and experience the exciting unknown of the music, anchored by the expansive dexterity of Blacksberg’s trombone.

ENCOUNTER 1 (Oct 15) features Dan’s trombone dueting with Victor Vieira-Branco on vibraphone. Victor has made waves with his stunning and expressive vibraphone playing across the Northeast, as a solo performer, and with his trio Bark Culture. He and Dan will be mixing up as a duo for the first time. Atmospheric cellist Alyssa Almeida opens with a rare acoustic set.

ENCOUNTER 2 (Nov 19) brings Brooklyn-based bassist Max Johnson down to duet with Dan. Max and Dan have been solidly in each other’s orbits across many musical subcultures for years, and they’ll finally collide for the first time at this improvised performance! Philly stalwarts Veronica MJ and Matt Engle will open with a set drawn from their shared multifaceted musical lives.

ENCOUNTER 3 (Dec 17), in which Dan duets with drummer Tracy Lisk. Dan and Tracy found an easy and exciting rapport when playing together and are excited to share it to the public. Multi-instrumentalist and multi-dimensional force John Moran will offer an opening set.

Advance tickets for Encounters are sliding scale, $5–$15. We are also offering a package deal where you can pay $30 to attend all three events and support the whole series and its artists.
