The Topic

Are you aware of the social factors that may impact on your client's mental health?

Are you adjusting your treatment model to account for the social determinants of mental health?

Therapy models such as CBT, Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Schema Therapy provide little guidance on how to tailor treatment to account for social factors within the Biopsychosocial model. While most mental health practitioners are adept at spotting attachment or interpersonal factors of trauma, pervasive social factors are often overlooked or tagged on as an after thought.

This inaugural event introduces practitioners to a new concept of a Social Critic Mode. Through clearly articulating the powerful systemic societal influences in which the attachment process takes place, we can enhance the efficacy of Schema Therapy. While this is relevant in all client groups, it is particularly pertinent when working with clients who experience socially induced interpersonal or attachment trauma. These include bias, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and other social stressors that lead to the development and maintenance of schemas and modes.

On the day:

Racialised Trauma and Schema Therapy. Presentation and Q&A by Lorraine Gordon (Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist: UK).
Using Transformational Chairwork to Combat the Psychological Impact of Oppression. Presentation and live demonstration with audience members by Amanda Garcia Torres (Chair Work trainer: US).
Panel discussion: The Schema Therapist role in treating impacts of systemic oppression: from formulation to embodied practice. Speakers: Dr Xi Liu (they/them), Dr Nicole Manktelow (she/her) and Amanda Garcia Torres (she/her).
Join an optional brainstorming meeting to develop resources and further training.
The day will end with a performance by a local performance artist. Your entry will include a glass of mimosa and lunch for the day (please advise us of any dietary requirements).

This event is open to any mental health professionals interested in using a Schema Therapy framework and those who work with marginalised communities that experience mental health concerns. If you are not able to attend due to lack of funds, please get in contact.

This event can count towards 4 CPD hours.

Event takes place in Newtown, Sydney. A recording of the presentations is also available for those who can only attend virtually. Recording will be available after the event to be watched on demand.
