This is an event coordinated by volunteers of the Melbourne Renew Members' Branch.

A pilot demonstration has been undertaken in Geelong to optimise energy consumption for a number of households. The project involves installing a prototype energy optimization product in the participant household. The project seeks to assess whether the developed prototype allows end users to optimally use appliances, and improves their energy efficiency and in effect, reduces energy bills. The prototype includes Raspberry Pi microcontrollers and smart plugs, which will use the home Wi-Fi network to execute the appliance on/off operation according to the designed energy use optimisation algorithm.

Based on the trial between March-May 2022, on an average, participant’s net electricity consumption has decreased by 38.85% (1.5 kWh) in comparison to the same time period in 2021. This study has been funded by the City of Greater Geelong, the Geelong Manufacturing Council and the state government for funding this pilot study for households in Geelong, through Cleantech Innovations Geelong.

Dr Shama Naz Islam

Dr Shama Naz Islam is a senior lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Deakin University. She is a leading researcher of things for smart energy applications, optimum energy management, energy data analytics, and smart grid security. She has been an investigator in a number of ARENA funded projects. In 2020-2021, and she has been funded from the Geelong City Council to implement a pilot scale demonstration of energy use optimisation technologies.
