Make this fun and enviro-friendly patchwork cushion using upcycled shirts.

Whether you’re a patchwork beginner, or an experienced quilter new to upcycling, in this one-day workshop hosted by modern quilt artist, Tara Glastonbury from Stitch and Yarn, you’ll learn how to deconstruct clothing for patchwork and sew with different weight fabrics to create a one-of-a-kind piece.

Starting with the traditional red of a log cabin we’ll be making the block before cutting it up and swapping sections with classmates to create our finished cushion top. We’ll then explore large-stitch hand quilting and options for cushion backs. Each participant will receive step-by-step instructions to complete a 50cm x 50cm cushion.

This workshop is ideal for people aged 16+ years. Participants must have basic level sewing skills. Instruction will not include how to operate a sewing machine.

What to Bring:
At least two shirts you are happy to deconstruct and share – stripes, checks or solid colours work best.
You can also bring similar scrap fabric in cotton if you have it.
Please don’t bring any fabrics or clothing containing stretch.
Sewing machine and extension lead in good working order.
Sewing thread and bobbin in a neutral colour in your machine (a cream, ecru, greys etc.)
General sewing kit (pins, scissors, stitch ripper, etc.).
Snacks and lunch.

Tutor:
Tara Glastonbury is a modern quilt artist and designer with a preference for using recycled materials. She is particularly conscious that, in most communities, textile art or craft is seen as women’s work and is – perhaps as a consequence – largely undervalued. Her current practice is an exploration of this, as well as the tensions between textile art and a crafts-based production practice; between corporate work and working as a maker and the personal consequences of that in a western capitalist society; as well as what those choices mean for the wider physical environment.
