Melbourne Conservatorium Big Band and Jazz Orchestra
Experience the energy and excitement of large ensemble jazz as the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music’s Big Band and Jazz Orchestra take to the stage at Kenneth Myer Auditorium. Featuring some of the Conservatorium’s emerging jazz and improvising musicians, the two ensembles present a dynamic program spanning the rich history of big band music through to contemporary large ensemble jazz. Expect powerful ensemble playing, inventive arrangements and exciting improvisation, with repertoire showcasing both the collective sound of the bands and the individual voices of featured soloists. The University of Melbourne Big Band, directed by Mat Jodrell, and the University of Melbourne Jazz Orchestra, directed by Jordan Murray, bring together students from across the Conservatorium for an afternoon celebrating the breadth, creativity and enduring vitality of the jazz orchestra.

This event takes place in Kenneth Myer Auditorium, located on the ground floor of The Ian Potter Southbank Centre. Please enter via the main entrance at 43 Sturt St, Southbank VIC 3006.

Melbourne Conservatorium Big Band
This semester, the Melbourne University Big Band presents a program celebrating the work of some of the leading contemporary jazz composers and arrangers from Australia and around the world. The program features music by Vanessa Perica, Remy Le Boeuf, Dave Panichi, Miho Hazama, Jared Schonig and Jim McNeely, showcasing the diversity, creativity and energy of contemporary big-band jazz.

Vanessa Perica
Vanessa Perica is an award-winning Australian composer, arranger and conductor based in Melbourne, known for her bold and emotionally expressive writing for large jazz ensembles. Her work combines contemporary jazz and classical influences, including commissions and collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and her own Vanessa Perica Orchestra.
Remy Le Boeuf
Remy Le Boeuf is a four-time Grammy-nominated American composer and saxophonist whose music combines jazz with contemporary classical and indie-rock influences. He leads the jazz orchestra Assembly of Shadows and has composed for ensembles including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, while also co-leading the experimental Le Boeuf Brothers with his twin brother Pascal.
Dave Panichi
Dave Panichi is an Australian composer, arranger, trombonist and bandleader who has worked extensively in both Australia and the United States. His writing draws on his deep experience in big-band jazz, developed through performances with artists and ensembles including the Buddy Rich Big Band, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Bob Mintzer.
Miho Hazama
Miho Hazama is a Japanese composer, arranger and conductor whose sophisticated large-ensemble writing blends jazz, classical composition and contemporary orchestral influences. She leads the jazz chamber orchestra m_unit and has served as chief conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band, while writing for ensembles including the Metropole Orkest and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Jared Schonig
Jared Schonig is an award-winning American drummer, composer and bandleader whose work spans contemporary jazz, big-band music, Broadway and commercial recording. He has released original music for quintet and big band and has performed or recorded with artists including Chris Potter, John Patitucci, Darcy James Argue, Miho Hazama and the 8-Bit Big Band.
Important Information
Please arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to secure your seat. Due to high demand, if you have not arrived by the start of the event, your ticket may be released to any waiting patrons at the door.
Please stay home if you feel unwell, even with mild symptoms. Face masks are welcome in all settings for community and personal safety.
Admission to any of our concerts and events is strictly at the discretion of Front of House. We have zero tolerance for any disrespectful behaviour.
PARKING
The City of Melbourne has changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine.
