Epizo Bangoura - Drum and dance workshop Christchurch

Great news! Epizo is here in Christchurch and offering a drum and dance workshop!

Born in Conakry, Guinea, Epizo began his musical journey at a very young age and later toured internationally, including with the National Ballet of Guinea. He’s widely recognised for his deep understanding of West African musical traditions — both as a djembe master drummer and as a dancer — and has spent decades sharing these rhythms globally through performance, teaching classes and workshops, and cultural exchange.

• Drumming workshop - 6:00pm to 7:10pm

Participants will learn traditional West African rhythm on the djembe and sometimes other instruments like dunun drums — exploring basic techniques, rhythmic patterns, and ensemble playing.

• Dance workshop - 7:20pm to 8:30pm

The dance workshop will include a traditional dance where participants are invited to embody the rhythm through movement. This creates a deeper somatic connection with the beats and cultural context of the music

Beyond technique, Epizo shares insight into the cultural significance of rhythms and dances — connecting participants with the living traditions of West African performance. These sessions are designed for all skill levels — whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned drummer or dancer, you’ll be guided with clear, supportive instruction.
