ABOUT ARTIST - LINDA CHANT
Artist statement
Linda Chant uses mediated images and objects, to develop works of uncertainty, fragility, and unsettling beauty. She finds inspiration in memory, language, Art history, found imagery and objects, layering them with paint, pencil, fabric, plaster, adding, subtracting until a new way of seeing is revealed. This unstructured method requires intuition and trust in the process.
Participating in TCP, Cave Urban workshop, where invasive weeds were used to construct a pod form, Chant shifted her thinking toward the disciplines of design, architecture, and engineering.
Participating in TCP, Cave Urban workshop, where invasive weeds were used to construct a pod form, Chant shifted her thinking toward the disciplines of design, architecture, and engineering.
The pod became a visual metaphor for a vessel. She found images of Gothic Architecture reiterated the symmetry, balance, repetition and linear decoration found in the pod. Still Life Genre Painting, plump and drunk with exotic flowers, prompted associations with introduced plants and floristry.
Chant has produced drawings of imagined vessels asking the viewer to imagine what they may hold and consider ideas of containment and protection. This work sits seamlessly alongside her current practice, in fact nourishes it.
