Essential First Aid with a Farming/Rural slant

Come learn or refresh your first aid skills.

This course covers all the elements of our standard Essential course and the 2 Unit standards 6402 and 6401, with a few added concepts including Prevention, Preparedness and Communication

The certification is valid for two years with a short fresher then required to renew your certificate.

This comprehensive day long training will help strengthen skill and confidence.

Covered as part of this day:

- Primary assessment for adults, children, vehicles and choking with a focus on farming dangers and the ability to call for help, and access for emergency services

- CPR and access to a defibrillator

- Bleeding and shock with ideas for improvising

- Bandaging

- Hypo and hyperthermia

- Medical conditions. Seizures, asthma, heart, etc, etc, with some discussion around environmental effects

- Broken bones, dislocations, soft tissue injuries and relating into the farming type issues.

- Poisons on farms and where stored.

- Burns. Machinery burn, hot water, sun

- Q & A and what other aspects participants may want covered, as time allows.

Examples throughout will have a rural emphasis and room for discussion on known incidents or issues.

The day is very fluid usually with plenty of discussion often occurring in the breaks or over a shared lunch.

About Gwyn the Red Cross First Aid Educator:

"I grew up on a dairy farm in Northland (just South of Whangarei) in the 60’s and 70’s. The first aid started as my Dad was a typical old school farmer, and consequently H&S wasn’t at the top of the list – so patch him up to get back to the house. As a young un work on the farm was compulsory so my own share of injuries from back then. Went on to do stints in forestry, Search and Rescue, with St John as a volunteer, an Army medic Territorial. My first aid is just that – the aid before Ambulance and further help arrives. Not necessarily pretty but works." 😊
