WORKSHOP SERIES

In conjunction with our Echoes Exhibition for the River of Art Festival, EFTAG members are offering a series of 5 workshops.

You can book for 1 individual workshop or more. You can also book multiple tickets for the same workshop if you are bringing a friend/s.

Workshops will be running on selected mornings & afternoons during the Festival - see details below.

LIST OF WORKSHOPS

WORKSHOP 1 - SHEER DELIGHT: layer & stitch - workshop with Alison Bogg

Date & Time: Thursday 26th September 9.30am - 1pm

Join EFTAG member and textile artist Alison Bogg to explore the delights of sheer fabric appliqué!

Discover interesting ways to overlay translucent/sheer fabrics in combination with other fabrics to create striking colour/tonal effects using simple shapes, motifs and hand stitches.

Your layered and stitched piece can be developed as a textile art piece or made into a decorative item (cushion cover, table mat etc).

Materials are provided. No experience necessary. (Suitable for ages 18 and older)

WORKSHOP 2 - THREAD OF LIFE: the beauty & imperfection of Japanese Boro & Sashiko - workshop with Alison Bogg

Date & Time: Saturday 28th September 9.30am - 1pm

Delve into the world of Japanese textile traditions - Boro (patchwork/mending) & Sashiko (stitching ) with EFTAG member and textile artist Alison Bogg and learn how to apply these techniques to create unique textile items.

Using an array of Japanese, indigo dyed and other fabrics, you will be able to create a patchwork fabric composition, blended with simple and meditative hand stitching to create your Boro cloth.

This can be used to create a textile item using your finished Boro cloth - book cover, table mat, cushion cover or art piece.

Materials are provided. No experience necessary. (Suitable for ages 16 and over)

WORKSHOP 3 - KNOTLESS NETTING/LOOPING - workshop with Trish Flynn

Date & Time: Thursday 3rd October 9am - 12.30pm

Learn the art of knotless netting, also known as looping, with EFTAG member and textile artist Trish Flynn.

The ancient textile skill of knotless netting, or looping is still used extensively by cultures around the world to make string bags, fishing nets and decorative items.

To learn the technique Trish will guide you to cover a river stone or make a small bag or vessel using beautiful coloured waxed linen thread. The technique can be used in many ways, from making small bags and other useful objects, beautiful pendant jewellery, scarves or incorporated into sculptural art.

No experience is required and all materials are provided

WORKSHOP 4 - INTRODUCTION TO COLLAGE - workshop with Hilary Metcalf

Date & Time: Thursday 3rd October 1.30pm - 5pm

Introduction to Collage with EFTAG member and artist Hilary Metcalf.

Making small collages is a great way to learn about composition, colour and design. It’s also economical and environmentally friendly! All you need is some old magazines, books or advertising material, a glue stick and some scissors to get going.

In this class students will make several small collages which can be used as greeting cards. Through this process they will learn about their colour and stylistic preferences, and how to achieve results that are pleasing.

Suitable for complete beginners or artists working in other mediums who want a chance just to play with colour and design.

Please bring: Students will need to bring only a glue stick, and a pair of scissors (although we will mainly tear the papers!). If you have some, bring old home décor, food, travel magazines. These can be picked up cheaply at op shops. Otherwise, the instructor will provide plenty of raw materials to work with.

WORKSHOP 5 - COILED BASKETRY - workshop with Trish Flynn

Date & Time: Saturday 5th October 9.30am - 1pm

Get hands on with the traditional craft of coiled basketry using beautiful hand dyed coloured raffia and recycled fabric.

You will learn the fundamental skills of coiling, how to start your piece, shape it, and add materials to make a small basket, mat or wall art. This is a very beginner friendly technique and is incredibly relaxing once you get started.

You will be able to choose your own colour scheme and shape your vessel to create a unique and original design.

Suitable for all aged 12 and over, all materials provided. Additional take home raffia will be available for purchase on the day at the cost of $10 a bundle.

EFTAG ARTISTS

Alison Bogg - Alison’s professional background encompasses set/costume design, costume technology, textile arts, puppetry, & arts education, which influences her work, with a focus on experimenting with textile surface design, indigo dyeing & shibori. She regularly runs workshops in the region and at her textile studio in Bingie. Alison is a member of the Eurobodalla Fibre & Textile Artists Group (EFTAG), Narooma School of Arts & Craft Australia.

Trish Flynn - Trish has been using traditional basketry and weaving techniques to create contemporary baskets, vessels and sculptural pieces for over 10 years. The techniques featured in Trish’s pieces include twining, looping, and coiling using a range of natural fibres such as linen, hemp, flax and paper twine, raffia, harvested reeds and vines. Trish also includes recycled materials including copper wire from electrical cables, and fabrics. Trish is a member of the Eurobodalla Fibre & Textile Artists Group (EFTAG), and both ACT and NSW Basketry Groups.

Hilary Metcalf - Hilary is a local, self taught artist who has worked mainly in textiles but in recent years has developed a passion for combining paper into her work.
