Evening of Bharatanatyam
Event description
Join Vaidehi Subramanyan for an evening of South Indian classical dance, learn about the art form and the stories behind the movement.
Bharatanatyam is a beautiful and energetic classical south Indian dance form originating in the ancient temples of Tamil Nadu, consisting of pure dance (nritta) focussed on rhythm and grace, story-telling (nritya) and acting (natya). The dance has traditionally explored themes from Hindu mythology and folklore, spanning everyday relationships and romance to devotion and communion with a higher form.
Having recently returned from a 6 month immersive residency in Chennai, India, Vaidehi will present a selection of Bharatanatyam pieces, with accompanying explanations to help the audience connect with the art form and guide them through this unique experience!
Vaidehi trains in the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam from renowned and senior gurus K.P. Yesodha and Ambika Buch. She is an active member of the Ainslie + Gorman Arts Centres community and Ausdance ACT.
Door Open: 6:30pm for a 7:00pm performance.
