Find out how to work for climate in any role

Want to work for climate but don’t know how?

Although there are some people who get to earn a living working directly on climate through science, advocacy or education, the rest of us might wonder how our skills could ever apply, no matter how much we care.

Turns out, anyone can work for climate, regardless of skills and passions.

Everyone’s Climate Series, returns to women’s leadership in When She Leads 2: How to Work for Climate, where you'll hear from five fascinating women who show up in very different roles, yet all work for climate.

Our amazing speakers are:

Lucy Piper - Director, Work for Climate

Emma Garlett - Managing Director, Garlett Group

Lacey Filipich - Founder, Money School

Rikki Hendon - Secretary, Unions WA

Verity Morgan-Schmidt - CEO, Farmers for Climate

This is the second instalment of the joyful climate leadership event series – by women, for everyone. Great food for thought for school and university students in your life.

In collaboration with Solutions for Climate WA.

Hosted by Meri Fatin

WA Museum Boola Bardip

The Speakers

  • Verity Morgan-Schmidt – CEO, Farmers for Climate

Verity Morgan-Schmidt has a Masters in Sustainable Development and leadership roles spanning industry, advocacy, biospheres and sustainability. She grew up in the sheep and wheat country of Western Australia's Wheatbelt, and that grounding has shaped a career dedicated to lifting farmer voices where it matters most. From roustabout and wool auctioneer to boardrooms and policy tables, she's lived agriculture from the ground up. Verity was the inaugural CEO of Farmers for Climate Action, has recently rejoined the team, and most recently led AgZero, a farmer-led organisation helping rural communities navigate climate risk, opportunity and the clean energy shift.

  • Rikki Hendon – Secretary, Unions WA

Rikki Hendon is the Secretary of Unions WA, the peak union body in Western Australia. She took on the role in the December 2024, following a 17-year career at the CPSU/CSA, the WA State Public Sector Union, which included six years as its Branch Secretary. Rikki is committed to leading a strong and collaborative union movement that builds the collective power and improves the lives of all working Western Australians.

  • Lacey Filipich – Founder, Money School

Lacey Filipich is an international award-winning financial educator, best-selling author, TEDx speaker and - plot twist - a chemical engineer. She founded Money School in 2010 to help Australians master money and has been teaching personal finance skills ever since. Prior to (and sometimes in parallel with) financial education, Lacey worked in the mining industry as an engineer and consultant across Australia and the US.

  • Emma Garlett – Managing Director, Garlett Group

Emma Garlett is a proud Nyungar-Nyiyaparli-Yamatji woman from Geraldton and a leading First Nations executive, corporate strategist, and legal academic. She is the Managing Director of Garlett Group, a 100% First Nations-owned impact consulting and specialist communications firm focused on sustainability, digital solutions, and strategy. With an extensive professional footprint spanning law, academia, media, mining, and corporate governance, Emma is widely recognised for her expertise in complex stakeholder engagement, strategic development, and driving meaningful First Nations inclusion across government and corporate sectors.

  • Lucy Piper – Director, Work for Climate

Lucy Piper worked for nearly a decade at Intrepid Travel before she started climate work. Now, as Program Director at WorkforClimate.org, she works at the intersection of climate action, leadership, and storytelling, building a global support system for corporate employees pushing their companies to act on climate. Through the WorkforClimate Academy and the Employee Climate Action Network (ECAN), scaling inside-out change and equipping employees with the tools, networks, and confidence to lead.

The Host

Meri Fatin regularly convenes public conversations with a particular interest in the transformation of leadership and culture that is needed to secure a safe future for us all. A chance opportunity to bring Christiana Figueres, the chief architect of the Paris Climate Agreement, to Perth in early March 2020 led to her focus on leadership, climate transition and environmental issues. Meri was guest curator of the TEDxPerth COUNTDOWN: WA Climate Leadership Summit 2020 which led to founding WA Climate Leaders. This informal network is intended to inspire visionary leadership on climate action in WA in this critical decade.
