Description
An evening public presentation of a textile work that records every piece of direct speech by women in the Bible. This public lecture will explore the words of
women, their roles in the text, poetry and reflection. Attendees will be able to be up close with the work, ask questions and be reinspired by stories in the Bible.
From 2019-2024 Miriam Jessie Fisher worked quietly in the snatches of her life on a 3m wide piece of fabric on which she stitched every piece of direct speech
by women in the Bible. She is now working on poetic offerings to accompany each of these women.
Miriam Jessie is one of Laidlaw’s interdisciplinary lecturers – working in both our School of Theology and in our School of Education. She is a woman with a deep passion for the Bible and the Church in all its denominational giftedness. Miriam Jessie’s hope is always that her work will ignite a passion for revisiting
the Bible and telling it better.
On the evening participants will be able to be up close with the work which is currently displayed on our Christchurch campus. This work has been displayed at Festival One, the Evangelical Women in Academia Conference and the NZ Conference for RE Teachers and School Chaplains and accompanied with talks that have been well received. This is the first time Miriam Jessie will be offering the work in a public manner.
Laidlaw College warmly invites anyone with an interest in the stories of the Bible, poetry and textiles to come to this evening. Miriam Jessie adds a reminder that the stories of women in scripture are for all Christians, not just women, and have something deeply encouraging for us all. The evening is likely to include laughter, possibly tears and will be genuinely warm and welcoming for anyone who would like to attend regardless of their personal familiarity with the Bible.

Miriam Jessie Fisher
Miriam Jessie is an interdisciplinary Lecturer in the School of Theology and School of Education. She lectures in Reading the Bible, our Postgraduate Certificate in Theology for educators, Formation, and Tūmanako. Miriam Jessie’s first qualifications are in teaching and she has taught in Aotearoa, Australia, and the UK, in state, Christian and Māori contexts. Miriam Jessie is also a textile artist, poet and performer and her research work and outputs reflect these intersections. In teaching Miriam Jessie has taught and offered professional development in the Arts and is an advocate for how the Arts can transform and enhance creativity and classroom practices. She has led and written programmes for schools and churches as well as creating professional development for teachers. Miriam Jessie regularly speaks in a variety of churches and runs leadership and spirituality retreats. She has a passion for the use of te reo me ona tikanga Māori in education and church spaces. Miriam Jessie also helps with signing for worship for the Deaf community at her church.
