'Excuse me, your authentic self is showing' by Dane Hiser
Event description
Over fifteen years ago, regular live comedy-goer Dane Hiser was issued (or "forced into", if we want to be accurate) a challenge by a "friend" and proper musician to write and perform stand-up comedy in six weeks-time at Petersham Bowling Club for the very first time.
On Thursday 10 April 2025, Dane returns to the scene of the crime to present, let's call it "a draft" of his new one-hour show:
"Excuse me, your authentic self is showing"
In his 20’s, diagnoses of depression, anxiety and OCD came onto the scene, and treatment was applied to keep it (relatively) at bay.
Cut to 20 years later, and a shock discovery was made - submerging fundraising manager, marketer, communicator, comedian, comedy promoter, room runner, storyteller and actor Dane Hiser into a “not great” 5 years.
After a whirlwind of the lowest of lows, smatterings of highs, endless appointments and tests, total confidence destruction...oh and a GLOBAL PANDEMIC (famously not best mixed with OCD), a frantic search for answers and almost every potential remedy under the sun - Dane finds himself somehow close(ish) to finally accepting and loving (yuk!) his true self and identifying something at least resembling purpose.
And it only took 46 years.
Nice and famous people saying nice things:
“Dane Hiser is as hilarious as he is original. F*%k, he made me laugh,” Fiona O’Loughlin.
"When I first met Dane, I thought to myself "he'll never be funny", then BAM!!! Like a superhero out of a phone booth…” Tommy Dean.
“Flaunting one's foibles is part and parcel with being a stand-up comedian, but Dane Hiser manages to highlight his in a refreshing and compelling manner,” Nyssa Packham, Weekend Notes.
