Tasmania's Phylloxera Incursion Plan and Exercise NIMVY '26

Tasmania enjoys many advantages over other wine regions in Australia - great climate, great fruit, great people, and we are free of Phylloxera. While we are focused on ensuring Tassie continues to be Phylloxera-free, it is also important that we have a clear plan in case there comes a time, despite our best efforts, that Phylloxera is detected in one of our vineyards. We need to be proactive in prevention, but also prepared for the worst. To this end, the Wine Tasmania Technical Committee drafted a plan in 2021 to be used if Phylloxera is ever detected. This proactive approach will give the Tasmanian wine sector the benefit of being across the plan before it is enacted, and understanding the implications for your business.

Exercise NIMVY '26

Now that we have a plan, we need to test it.

Come join the Wine Tasmania Technical Committee and Biosecurity Tasmania for Exercise NIMVY '26 (Not In My VineYard). Craig Elliot from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture will facilitate this workshop on how the plan will practically work and run through some scenarios around the first detection/s of Phylloxera. We will also hear from Biosecurity Tasmania on its role in a biosecurity emergency. Afternoon tea will be provided, and we should finish at about 3.00 pm.

If this all sounds familiar, yes, we did this 5 years ago. And we intend to repeat this to continually test and improve our plan.
