Hanging by a Thread: Mosaics for Afghan Women
    22 Aug to 22 Oct 2024
Showing in the Glassworks Engine Room

Part of the Hanging by a Thread project, this project aims to raise awareness of the plight of Afghan women and girls. This exhibition will bring together mosaics from SA, VIC, NSW, QLD, TAS, WA and New Zealand undertaken by communities during the 2022 International Year of Glass. Each artist has made a small segment of glass mosaic, which is being joined together to create a series of giant scarfs. Curated by Kristin Wohlers and Behishta Anwar

    MOSAIC Workshop at Canberra Glassworks

    Saturday 24 August 11am to 2.30pm or Sunday 25 August 11am to 2.30pm

Create your own mosaic tribute inspired by Afghan embroidery at our workshop as part of our exhibition "Hanging By A Thread - Mosaics for Afghan Women" taught by Kristin Wohlers and Sandra Sullivan. This workshop will explore the different designs and pattern of Afghan embroidery and take inspiration from the hundreds of interpretations on display in the Engine Room at Canberra Glassworks. Participants will learn how to fabricate a small individual mosaic with glass pieces, known to mosaic artists as tesserae and explore andamento, the flow and movement of glass in a mosaic work.
