Workshop Overview

Expanded Painting & Fragmented Drawing is a one-day experimental studio workshop that investigates the intersection of drawing, painting, collage, and sculptural processes. Drawing upon methods developed through my recent exhibition at  Side Gallery Pressure Points, participants will explore ways of disrupting and reconstructing imagery through layering, fragmentation, tracing, transfer, assemblage, and surface intervention.

The workshop encourages participants to move beyond traditional approaches to drawing and painting, examining how images can be expanded into three-dimensional forms and how sculptural thinking can inform mark-making and composition. Through a series of guided exercises and demonstrations, participants will develop new strategies for generating imagery, embracing chance, material experimentation, and process-based inquiry.

Workshop Goals - Participants will:

• Explore experimental approaches to drawing and image construction.

• Investigate fragmentation, repetition, layering, and visual disruption.

• Develop an understanding of how sculptural processes can inform painting and drawing practices.

• Learn methods of transferring, tracing, collaging, and reconstructing imagery.

• Experiment with unconventional materials and surfaces.

• Generate a series of resolved studies and sculptural drawing outcomes.

• Develop practical ideas that can be adapted for secondary and tertiary visual arts classrooms.

Participants are encouraged to bring:

• Photocopies from their visual diaries, sketchbooks, or personal imagery.

• Additional photocopied reference images, particularly:

• Anatomical references

• Botanical references

• Highly patterned imagery

• High-contrast black-and-white images

• Linear and graphic imagery

Participants should also bring:

• Any preferred drawing tools and an apron. The following will be provided ( Scissors, Graphite pencils, Black fineliner, Permanent markers, Brush-tip markers, Chisel-tip markers)

• cardboard boxes  to take home what they have created  from Sunday's Workshop.

Suitable Audience - The workshop is designed for:

• Secondary Visual Arts teachers.

• Practising artists.

• Pre-service teachers.

Morning tea, lunch and refreshments will be provided.
