Our March Roaster in Residence, Espresso Workshop have prepared an exciting sensory journey for their masterclass in their Orakei Roastery in Auckland:

Take a sensory journey with Espresso Workshop.  Coffee has a diverse range of flavours, we’ll introduce you to the world of coffee flavour, showcasing the coffee origins we offer at Espresso Workshop, why they were selected and going into depth on their regional characteristics, what their attributes are, what flavours they offer and which might suit your taste preferences.  We’ll talk about why we blend and why some coffees selected for single origin.  The masterclass will conclude with a fun taste challenge to tie in some of the aspects presented in the masterclass.

Detail

  1. What affects coffee flavour? From country of origin to harvesting and processing, from varietals to altitude, terroir, agricultural techniques, shipping, roasting and ultimately brewing, we will go through how the different steps all play a big part in developing and delivering coffee flavours.
  2. How do we select the coffees that go into our blends and single origin offer? A broad description of the main coffee regions and their flavour characteristics. 
  3. Discuss cupping/tasting to identify potential coffee flavours affect our decision to blend or use individually. Focus on body, sweetness and acidity. Also our choice towards espresso and filter roast. 
  4. How to choose the right coffee to brew at home - read the bag for coffee info (and what they mean), flavour descriptors, blend vs. single origin.
  5. Taste challenge
