Experimenting with ASL Shadow Interpreters
Workshop Synopsis:
This is an interactive in-person workshop designed for theatre practitioners including but not limited to: actors, directors, producers, stage managers, technicians and administrators. This workshop is designed specifically around scripted theatrical material and will dive in to explore what shadow interpretation is, how to work with Deaf actors, Deaf coaches, directors and Deaf/ASL hearing interpreters. In the morning there will be a roundtable discussion where questions are welcome.
Participants will register in one of the three roles for the workshop for the afternoon masterclass:
As an Actor: you will be given an opportunity to prepare two scenes and to perform one with other actors, Deaf actors and/or interpreters
As a Director: you will be given two scenes to prepare and then direct one group of actors and interpreters collaborating with the Deaf coach/director.
As an Observer: you will watch the Actor/Director masterclass format and have opportunities to ask questions at the end of the workshop.
This is a rare opportunity where participants will have the opportunity to learn, participate and witness this type of accessibility initiative and have the freedom to explore with interpreters and Deaf community members.
Learning outcomes:
Develop skills for collaborating with Deaf and hearing interpreters, Deaf actors and directors
Develop strategies for blocking scenes to ensure proper sightlines for interpretation and artistic expression of the scenes
Explore how ASL Shadow interpretation can be used in performance to push boundaries
Build confidence in working with Deaf community members and ASL interpreters
Understand the considerations in staging with ASL interpretation and Deaf community in mind
Learn from fellow participants through collaborative sessions and discussions

- What is Shadow Interpretation?
Unlike traditional ASL interpretation where you have one or more “zones” where an interpreter will interpret a performance separate from the staged action. Shadow Interpretation includes interpreters onstage in the blocking of a scene and matches each character with an interpreter. This form of interpretation is preferred by the Deaf community as it seamlessly integrates the accessibility into the performance, enabling them to watch from any space in the theatre and observe the entire show without ping-ponging their eyes between the interpreter and stage action.
- What if I can’t afford the subsidized ticket rate, can I still attend?

- I am disabled and need support to attend this workshop, do I need to purchase two tickets?
No, we have complimentary tickets available for companions and support workers. Please add this note to your registration under accessibility and we will make sure to provide lunch for your companion as well.
- I am Deaf, will there be ASL interpretation for the workshop discussions?
Yes, there will be ASL interpretation for the full workshop, so you will be able to follow the discussion and the interpretation of the scenes presented in the workshop.
- I have dietary restrictions, what kind of sandwich will it be?
All sandwiches will be catered by Chef Rick’s, therefore there is limited ability to accommodate multiple dietary restrictions. Please note Chef Rick’s is not an allergen free facility and cannot guarantee 100% that there will be no cross contamination.
