About the Expert Guide

This Expert Guide outlines the fundamentals of a Total Impact Portfolio (TIP), explores practical ways to integrating an impact lens into an investment strategy, and dispels common misconceptions about incorporating impact as a core pillar alongside risk and reward in an investment portfolio.

A Total Impact Portfolio (TIP) is an investment strategy that intentionally evaluates and manages risk, reward and impact to help investors achieve both financial returns and positive social or environmental impact.

Panel Speakers


Kylie Charlton | Managing Director at Australian Impact Investments

Kylie joined Australian Impact Investments in 2014 and has worked in Australia and internationally at the intersection of mainstream capital markets, impact investment and philanthropy for nearly twenty years. Kylie is a co-founder of Unitus Capital, Venture Partner for Giant Leap Fund I, Advisor to Giant Leap Fund II, member of the Investment Committee of the Australian Government supported Australian Development Investments, member of BetaShares Responsible Investment Committee, advisory board member to the Impact Investment Summit Asia Pacific, and awardee of the AFR 100 Women of Influence 2018.  Prior to transitioning her career into impact investment, Kylie spent 11 years in commercial and investment banking. Kylie graduated in Commerce at University of Canberra and has an MBA from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford in England. 

Ingrid Albert Executive Director and head of The Tony Foundation at Alberts

Ingrid is Executive Director and member of the fifth generation at Alberts, an Australian family business that has backed pioneers since 1885. Today, Alberts is driven by a mission to create a vibrant, sustainable future through diverse activities including impact investing, philanthropy, advocacy, and collaboration, focused on Alberts’ four impact themes: equality, healthy minds, sustainable environment, and vibrant culture. Ingrid leads Alberts’ philanthropic arm, The Tony Foundation, which partners with pioneers harnessing the transformative power of music to improve life outcomes of young Australians. She also oversees a responsible investment strategy across its corpus, integrating positive and negative screens, stewardship, impact investing, and catalytic capital. An Alberts board director and Foundation investment committee member, she co-chairs Philanthropy Australia’s Family Foundations Peer Network and serves on PA’s Foundations Group for Impact Investing. Ingrid is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

Ben SmithHead of Impact Investing at Paul Ramsay Foundation

Ben leads the Paul Ramsay Foundation’s impact investing activities across the full risk/return/impact spectrum. He is Vice Chair of NatWest Social and Community Capital and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Centre for Social Impact, Flinders University. With a background in social finance, Ben has shaped major initiatives, co-authored the CFA UK’s Impact and Investing Certificate, and founded Australia’s Foundation Group for Impact Investors.

David HetheringtonChief Executive Officer at Impact Investing Australia

David is CEO of Impact Investing Australia and Chair of the Public Education Foundation and progressive think tank Per Capita. David has written on a wide range of economic and social policy issues. His work has appeared in The Guardian, The Economist, The Sydney Morning Herald, AFR and The Australian, and he was a regular commentator on ABC TV’s The Drum. In 2022, he was named in Pro Bono’s Impact 25 list as one of Australia’s 25 most influential non-profit leaders.

Sakshe Vasudeva | Altiorem Research Associate & co-author of the Expert Guide (alongside Kylie)

Sakshe recently completed an MBA with a specialisation in Finance from the University of Technology Sydney. She has previously worked in the area of waste management, focusing specifically on outreach-related activities. Sakshe is intrigued by the role of financial instruments in advancing sustainable development and aspires to grow her expertise in the field of sustainable finance.
