Juxtaposed still-life objects are the subject used to explore your own unique style of abstract painting.

Exploratory drawings of collage, line and colour develop compositions to be used in a finished painting.

Abstract paintings allow for an adventure in visual pleasure.

Using an automatic technique combined with observation you will create our own world of colour, form, and space.

When abstracting we can simplify and change the shapes, lines, colours, textures of objects without necessarily picturing the actual objects.

Abstraction can aim at seeing the objects in a new way, appealing to the emotions expressively in an exciting, unique and individual way.

Required materials

• Sketch book, cartridge paper and/or watercolour paper

• Acrylic paints & palette

• Brushes, rag, pencils, charcoals, inks, pastels (oil or soft), stick glue, scissors

• Canvas or canvas boards (size 1 large canvas approx. 70cm x 80 cm).

Easels provided.

Coffee and tea provided (BYO lunch each day).

Class limited to 10 participants.

Students will learn

Students will explore elements and principles of design mainly, line, shape, form, colour, composition, space and repetition. Various acrylic painting techniques such as acrylic washes, flat tone, blending and gradations and glazing. Mixed media with collage, ink, charcoal and/or pastels. Students will experiment with taking risks and using automatic approaches and responses in developing paintings. More than anything students will learn how liberating and stimulating abstract painting can be.

Students will complete an abstract painting using their personal interpretation of the subject, use of colour, individual brush work and mark making. As well as a series of work on paper using mixed media.

Suitable skill level

Adults at all levels; from experienced to beginner artists. Anyone who wishes to explore the concept of abstraction.

About the tutor

Kerry Wilson is an artist working between the various mediums of painting, drawing and printmaking. Kerry’s art practice has a preference for mark making using mixed media and exploring new techniques. Her work is more about sensations and poetic response than reality. Aiming to invoke the emotion, mood and drama of the natural world, she invites the viewer to experience and connect with the light, pattern and space in her paintings.

As an artist, educator and mentor for over 30 years, Kerry is passionate about the arts. She lives and works in Yandina on the Sunshine Coast. Her home is on bush acreage, where she balances her time working in the studio and en plein air. As well as teaching art at TAFE Queensland East Coast’s Nambour campus.
