With deep roots "on the land" in northern Hawke’s Bay, Phil possesses an innate passion for the local terroir, drawing inspiration from its diverse elements: the climate, rivers, soil, and sea, all of which profoundly shape the region's wines. Armed with a unique blend of practical knowledge cultivated from his upbringing and academic credentials—a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Wine Science—Phil seamlessly intertwines tradition with innovation. As a Senior Wine Judge and an avid wine enthusiast, his dedication to the craft is evident.

Phil's journey at Te Mata Estate, which began in 1992, has been enriched by vintage experiences at renowned estates such as Clos des Lombrays in Burgundy and Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux. Alongside his cherished family—wife Leanne, and children Benjamin and Hannah—Phil continues to elevate Te Mata's legacy with his expertise and unwavering passion.
