EXPLORING CUT AND PASTE - A CONTEMPORARY COLLAGE WORKSHOP - Following in their footsteps - MATISSE, HOCH, HEARTFIELD & HOCKNEY

Contemporay collage is a tool for expression, protest and play.

In this workshop we will look at collage work of Henry Matisse, Hannah Hoch, John Heartfield and David Hockney and learn what we can from their styles.

We will talk about and share what we see in the examples of work.What is it that appeals to you? What design elements you can see? What is the colour scheme? What would you do differently? Why?

Then we will start with some exercises exploring what we have discovered after examination and discussion. Where we go from this point is up to you. Continue to explore in bursts on small works or try your hand at a larger piece.

No matter was your preferred medium collage can be used as a jump start for a design process explore colour, new themes and grow new work.

Collage is a fabulous way to create. You don't need to draw or paint. In fact, you don't even need to use a pair of scissors or a blade. Just rip and tear :-)

You only need to be curious and ask ... what it I did this? What will happen? You can cut it up or tear it up. Rearrange the narrative. Your work will reflect your voice.

We will begin this workshop by looking at collage work by Henry Matisse, Hannah Hoch, John Heartfeild and David Hockney. I will lead you through some exercises to get you started. Then its over to you.

I will have a selection of books and magazines for you to look through. Often the images and text will jump start you on your journey.
