Exploring Inclusive Care for Women of Plus-size Sydney 2027
Every woman deserves maternity care that is respectful, evidence-based and tailored to her individual needs. Yet for women of plus size, pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period can bring additional clinical considerations, assumptions and barriers to care. How do we balance clinical guidance with informed choice, discuss weight-related considerations sensitively and ensure women feel heard, respected and supported?
Join us for Birth International's newest full-day workshop, Exploring Inclusive Care for Women of Plus-size, designed for midwives, childbirth educators and maternity care professionals looking to strengthen their confidence in providing inclusive, individualised care. Explore current evidence, challenge assumptions and examine how weight stigma, communication and clinical decision-making can influence women's maternity experiences.
Through engaging case studies, group discussions and practical reflection, you'll explore approaches to antenatal care, labour and birth, caesarean birth, postnatal recovery and breastfeeding support. Consider the role of collaborative care, explore practical challenges and develop strategies you can take back to your workplace to support more inclusive, individualised maternity care.
What you’ll take back to practice
✓ More thoughtful conversations Explore weight stigma, respectful language and communication approaches that support meaningful conversations about health and care.
✓ Individualised care planning Work through antenatal, birth and postnatal scenarios, considering clinical needs alongside each woman’s priorities, preferences and circumstances.
✓ Practical approaches to everyday care Examine equipment, the care environment and approaches to labour, birth, recovery and breastfeeding support.
✓ A broader understanding of inclusion Reflect on your own assumptions and consider culturally responsive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
✓ Stronger collaborative approaches Explore how midwives and other health professionals can work together to support physical health, emotional wellbeing and continuity of care.
✓ Put the learning into context
Consider an antenatal care plan, explore planning for labour and caesarean birth, and work through postnatal follow-up. These activities create space to discuss practical challenges and identify changes you could make in your own setting.
✓ Who is this workshop for?
Midwives and other maternity care professionals who want to strengthen their approach to caring for women of plus size, whether they are reviewing established practice or building their knowledge in this area.
