Exploring Neurodiversity in Therapy
Event description
In this two hour workshop you will:
- Learn and Identify why neurodivergence is essential to recognize
- Learn the parameters of neurodivergence and where it intersects with trauma
- Learn to develop language for discussing neurodivergence ad referrals for evaluation
- Identify awareness of how family systems can be impacted from neurodivergent family members from a relational standpoint
- Learn ethical approaches to working with the neurodivergent population coming from a place of "do no harm"
2 hours of Continuing education approved by MN Board of Marriage & Family Therapy and MN Board of Behavioral Health & Therapy

Schedule Outline
10:00am-10:20am: Introduction of Dr Helmen’s background and to neurodiversity
10:20-10:40 am: Review of what research & neurodivergent individuals tell us about the importance of identifying neurodivergence
10:40-11:20 am: Experiential exercise discussing traits, skills, and symptoms followed by discussion of application in therapy
11:20-11:40 am: Overview of language to consider when discussing neurodivergence and scripts for discussing/referring to evaluations
11:40-12pm: Q & A and final discussion
