1pm - 4pm as we explore the art of tatreez.

This coming together is in honour of the Palestinian people,

their heritage and their fight for freedom.

We will be lead by Mariam Chanaoui, a multi-discplinary artist working on Gundungurra country. She is a super creative and passionate soul whose longing to re-connect with her Palestinian heritage lead her to seek out Tatreez (traditional Palestinian needlework) at high school. At the time she found she needed to be as much her own teacher and researcher. Fast forward, she further developed her skills at university and is now a regular workshop deliverer in this ancient art.

In addition to Mariam's passion we will have Lena, Mariam's Mum who share her journey as a woman with Palestinian heritage.

The practice of tatreez originated in Palestine over 3,000 years ago. It is a unique form of embroidery that brings together coloured threads in various patterns to create traditional motifs. Motifs were area-specific, as well as symbolic of important events and everyday life such as a wedding or pregnancy, features of nature and more recently of freedom.

The afternoon will include:

Story telling and sharing of the origins of Tatreez and a range of the different designs and colours for different meanings and regions.

All materials

needles
fabric - white Aida square cloth
scissors

NB If you wish to work with black or navy Aida cloth, you're welcome to supply your own. We have found white is best for needlework beginners.

Plus a range of delicious Palestinian delights to nourish you as we create together.

What to bring:

bottle of water
cushion to sit on or a yoga matt on the floor - there will be chairs also.
an open heart

Making a difference:

There will be an opportunity to donate to known and trusted organisations who are on the ground and making a difference in Gaza should you wish.

Parking:

Please do not park on the street.

Drive into 'Harmony' at no 11 Balaclava Rd, Balaclava where you will see signs directing you to follow the driveway to the rear of the property to the parking area.
