Exploring Urban Rivers: A Journey Along the Birrarung

Join fellow members for a relaxed post-conference cruise along the Birrarung (Yarra River), exploring the river’s cultural, ecological and historical significance and reflecting upon the role of urban waterways to cities and nature. Departing from Federation Wharf, this 2-hour field trip will include insights/reflections from First Nations representatives and river advocates on the Birrarung’s unique legal status as a living entity, waterway health, and the role philanthropy can play in supporting healthier urban waterways. Enjoy morning tea and time to mingle, as we explore the river up to Herron Island and downstream to the floating wetlands. Co-hosted by the members of Nature Impact Collective. 

Background

We will meet the Birrarung (Yarra River) at its landing place near Port Phillip Bay, where it completes its 242-kilometre journey from the slopes of the Great Dividing Range, through the Yarra Valley, and into the heart of Melbourne.

This lower stretch of the Birrarung was once a rich ecosystem of riparian vegetation and seasonal wetlands. Sometimes described as a "temperate Kakadu", its remarkable biodiversity made it an important place for the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and the broader Eastern Kulin Nation.*

Today, very little of this original landscape remains following extensive engineering, industrialisation and urban development along the river and port precinct. Yet the Birrarung is also a story of renewal. Across the catchment, Traditional Owners, community groups, researchers, governments and environmental organisations are working to restore the river's health, improve water quality, revive habitats and strengthen the connection between people and nature. Their efforts offer a powerful example of how long-term investment can contribute to the recovery of Australia's urban waterways.

Please note, unfortunately this field trip is not accessibility friendly, as the boat does not have ramp access and there are a few steps to board.
