Event description

Exploring the  Role of AI in Criminal Justice: Lessons Learned  from Practitioners in Malaysia

This workshop explores how AI and Sentencing have impacted the criminal justice system. Advancements in AI have revolutionised criminal justice practices, and the diffusion of AI innovations will not only transform organisational behaviour but proliferate faster than policies and regulations (See Carter et al, 2020).

In China, robot judges decide on small claim cases. Canada has a DoNotPay chatbot lawyer mobile app to robot judges in Estonia, adjudicating small claims to robot mediators in Canada, while in some Malaysian courts, AI has been used to recommend sentences from: physical and sexual assault, to traffic offences. Expanding the role of AI in the CJS comes with its own risks. Nations without an AI enabled infrastructure risk being left behind, deepening a digital divide.

Join us for an interactive workshop to better understand the evolving role of technology in sentencing and the criminal justice system and explore practical strategies to address the role of technology in a tech-driven society.
