Exploring Vulnerability: A Yarning Circle of Autoethnographic Narratives in Research
Event description
Join Badimia Nyarlu Maja (Badimia Woman Knowledge Holder), Dr. Carol Dowling, and Samara James (Kim Soo Im) in a collective Yarning Circle—a space for sharing stories, experiences, and reflections through the practice of autoethnography.
Drawing from First Nations traditions of yarning, this storytelling circle fosters a relational and reflective dialogue grounded in respect, deep listening, and connection.
Autoethnography offers a personal and critical lens through which researchers can explore their lived experiences, situating them within broader cultural, social, and political contexts. In this session, storytelling (Yarning) will be used as a method of inquiry and knowledge sharing.
Dr. Carol Dowling, a Badimia Anthropologist, and Samara James (Kim Soo Im), a subaltern feminist Ethnographer, will share their insights and personal experiences with autoethnographic research. Together, they will explore themes of vulnerability and resistance, particularly in the context of colonial research environments such as Australia. Their discussion will highlight the responsibility of researchers as caretakers of stories.
This Yarning Circle invites participants to listen, learn, and share their stories, encouraging vulnerability and openness within a supportive space where everyone is both a storyteller and a listener.
This workshop is part of CHASS, and is supported by AWGSA and Curtin University Gender Research Network.
