'Facing Monsters' Movie Night
Event description
This screening is part of a fundraising campaign to end violence, homelessness, and suicide in Brisbane on the week prior to Mental Health Awareness Week 2022. Proudly sponsored by Next Thursday and Jirsch Sutherland.
Facing Monsters is an amazing movie (sometimes scary) with a great message of courage, passion, and connection in life.Â
It is a feature-length documentary that digs deep into the psyche of enigmatic West Australian ‘slab wave’ surfer Kerby Brown, a man whose connection with the ocean runs as deep as his love for his family. This film is far more than just a surfing story. It’s an unapologetic musing into the essence of Kerby and his family as we join them on his quest to ride a ferocious slab wave in the deep southern ocean that no one on the planet has surfed before. It’s a film about fear, addictions, and family bonds as we explore what drives Kerby, what anchors him, and why he’s obsessed with pitting himself against one of nature’s most intimidating forces.
This story connects deeply with the vision of the Counselling Men Project (CMP) in creating a system that promotes human fulfillment and development by choosing human connection over profit.
When the session finishes, there will be a debrief about the challenges men are facing in today’s day and the main dots that connect with the movie.Â
All the proceeds of this event will go towards CMP, a nonprofit with the vision mentioned before that offers in-depth counselling for the most vulnerable men in our city.

On the occasion, photos will be taken to be used on social media. If you don't want to be on it, please advise beforehand.
Come along, bring your friends, and enjoy the movie knowing that you are engaging in a good and worthy cause. A bottle of water and popcorn are included on the ticket (a cinema session without it, is not cinema).Â
See you there.Â
