Sexuality and gender diverse children and young people who experience child abuse, and those who are in care, are amongst our most vulnerable. They face discrimination, stigma and greater challenges in finding their community of belonging in care. Parents and carers who identify as sexuality and gender diverse may also experience systemic and community discrimination; adding additional pressures to the normal challenges of caregiving. This lunch and learn will provide practitioners with insights into inclusive practice with sexuality and gender diverse children and young people, their parents and carers, family and kin. The session will be chaired by Edmundo Apon, Manager Practice & Permanency, Office of the Senior Practitioner. A/Prof Adam Bourne from the “Writing Themselves In 4” study will discuss the NSW results and the factors which influence health and wellbeing of sexuality and gender diverse young people. Dr Luke Gahan from the Australian Institute of Family Studies will talk about inclusive communication with LGBTIQ+ clients. Following this, a discussion will be held with panel members with a range of experiences to share in working with sexuality and gender diverse children and young people in care and their caregivers.
