Join us at State Library Queensland for an evening of connection and conversation ahead of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy week.

COVID-19 has highlighted the need for a wholistic approach to achieving media and information literacy for all. As global citizens, our collective competency to think critically and contribute carefully really matters - particularly in a landscape of increasing disinformation and political polarisation.

We’ll explore the role of education and curriculum, the responsibilities of communication, journalism and the media, and the critical importance of public information resources, spaces and services, such as libraries, in reducing vulnerability.

Hear our panel of experts discuss their experience and research in the Australian context and abroad, and come with your questions for a dynamic Q&A.

We’ll then continue the conversation on the State Library Terrace, with light refreshments included!

MEET OUR PANEL:

Dr Eun-Ji Amy Kim
Dr Eun-Ji Amy Kim is a Lecturer in Social Diversity and Indigenous Education at Griffith University, with over 10 years of curriculum and education program development and teacher training experience. A UNESCO consultant, her research expertise includes Global Citizenship Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Transdisciplinary collaboration. Dr Kim has also equipped cross-cultural working capacities, stemming from collaborating individual and organisations from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, South Korea, USA & UK.

Professor Mark Pearson
Mark Pearson is Professor of Journalism and Social Media at Griffith University and is a journalism and media law educator, blogger and author. He has written and edited for The Australian and has been published internationally in a range of outlets including the Wall Street Journal. His fields of expertise are media (and social media) law and mindful journalism ethical practice.

He has written or co-authored more than 100 academic works. His 12 books include Social Media Risk and the Law - A Guide for Global Communicators(with Susan Grantham, Routledge, 2021), six editions of Australia’s leading journalism law text The Journalist's Guide to Media Law (with Mark Polden, Allen & Unwin, 2019), Blogging and Tweeting Without Getting Sued (Allen & Unwin, 2012), and Mindful Journalism and News Ethics in the Digital Era (with Shelton A. Gunaratne and Sugath Senarath, Routledge, 2015). He has been elected life member of the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia.

Associate Professor Pradip Thomas
Pradip teaches at UQ and has written extensively on issues related to the political economy of communications, communications and social change, media and religion and India media. Pradip has been involved in the planning and evaluation of community media projects, and in the exploration of traditional knowledge. He has published well over 100 academic texts, including articles, books and book chapters on communication for social change.

Vicki McDonald AM FALIA, State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer, State Library of Queensland
Vicki McDonald is a key player in the transformation of the library sector in Queensland. As State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of State Library of Queensland she understands the need for a strong, relevant and innovative library service.Her national and international experience led to her appointment as State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of State Library of Queensland in 2016. Vicki has also held leadership roles at State Library of New South Wales and Queensland University of Technology. Her career includes roles at public, academic and state libraries. Vicki is a Past President of the Australian Library Information Association. She is also very active in the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and has held a number of positions, including Chair of the Academic and Research Libraries Standing Committee, Professional Committee Chair, a member of the Governing Board 2017-2021. In 2022, she will be Chair of National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA).

Grace Edward
Grace Edward is the Partnerships and Community Engagement Coordinator for the CALD COVID-19 Health Engagement Project auspiced by the Refugee Health Network In Queensland. In this Role Grace works closely with formal and informal CALD Community Leaders, Queensland Health, Hospital and Health care services, as well as settlement services to identify community needs and gaps in services to provide equitable access to healthcare and information during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Ilham Nafian (MC and Panel Moderator)
Ilham is a team member of the Digital and Communications team at Moreton Bay Region Libraries - Cultural Services.
He has regional experience in community education & compliance, as well as international experience in community development and Communication for Social Change.He is concurrently pursuing academic passions as a Master of Communication for Social Change student at the University of Queensland.
Ilham has a passion for creating meaningful social change through effective communication.
