At Level 3 Meeting Rooms, Toowoomba City Library, Corner of Herries and Victoria Streets, Toowoomba, QLD, 4350.

This is a special Sunday afternoon family event organised by Permaculture Toowoomba Inc.

Bookings are essential so that we have contact details and know how many will be attending.

Children (and attendees of all ages) as especially welcome.

What We'll Do

Nature Craft Activity + Crafting Showcase and Demonstrations

Back by popular demand (following our Christmas event last December), Jemma White will share her creative skills again for a Nature Craft Activity.  

We'll also showcase a range of local artisans, crafters, repairers, and makers with a sustainability focus.  This will include:

• Tahnee Elliott - Sewing, Mending, and Refashioning
• Jane Orme - Pottery
• Marina Nellie Elliott - Shoemaking and Leatherwork
• Rosemary Burgess - Knitting, Crochet, and Weaving
• Corey White - Leatherwork and Tool Restoration
• Jemma White - Natural Dye and Natural Ink
• Ingrid Tatow - A vast range of Crafts
• Janet Dennison - Knitting, Crochet, Embroidery, Patchwork, Beading, and Toy Making
• Mike Dennison - Woodwork

You'll have an opportunity to watch demonstrations, see finished work, ask questions, and be inspired to start creating and trying new skills in your own homes.  These demonstrations will be set up around the room and it will be an informal and relaxed afternoon.  You can watch and engage with just one or many different crafters/makers during the afternoon.  Some artisans will just have their work on display, and some will have hand-crafted items for sale.

Nature Craft Activity

Presented by Jemma White

Taking inspiration from our gardens, we will be reusing egg cartons to get creative.  Utilising common and repurposed materials, this activity table will be available to dip in and out of over the afternoon. All ages are encouraged to join in. 

Jemma White is a Permaculture Artist and Visual Art student based in Toowoomba.  She finds joy in reviving used and neglected objects and spaces. Experimenting with natural and local dye colours for fabrics and ink making, Jemma also dabbles in ceramics, printmaking, installation and assemblage. Jemma’s current project involves finding ways to integrate life with a young family into her arts practice.

Sewing, Mending, and Refashioning

Demonstrated by Tahnee Elliott

Tahnee Elliott will showcase some of her sewing creations (machine and hand), mending, and upcycling/refashioning.  She'll bring things to show and tell, and demos to watch.  Tahnee's happy to chat if you want to bring in things that need to be fixed or up-cycled to fit better or be turned into something new.  

Tahnee has been sewing with scraps her whole life: starting out as a child making satin bows from offcuts while her mum made ballet costumes. Tahnee loves using fabrics and notions from op shops or passed on from friends and family: the way you can make something unique, carry the memory that comes with the fabric or clothing, and save things from landfill. A favourite recent thing: a friend gave Tahnee an old denim couch cover in excellent condition, rescued by their commercial scrapping business. It has since been made into: a bolster, a tote bag, a vest, a handbag, patches, and counting!  Tahnee also volunteers sharing skills and helping the community repair their beloved items. 

For Sale: Tahnee will bring some hats, handmade with vintage and remnant fabrics, for adults and children.

Pottery

Demonstrated by Jane Orme

Jane Orme will showcase pottery. She will demo small pinch pots and other hand-built items.  Jane isn't sure that pottery is completely sustainable. This is something she keeps wrestling with, and is happy to discuss with others during the afternoon.

For Sale: Jane will bring along a few items for sale.

Leatherwork and Shoemaking

Demonstrated by Marina Nellie Elliott

Marina Nellie Elliott will showcase shoes she's been upcycling/remaking.  She will also possibly do some repairs on the day if you would like to bring shoes or bags along that need basic repairs.  Marina will either help problem-solve, suggest approaches for people to try at home, do some on-the-spot repairs, or take things home to work on, depending on the individual items. 

Afternoon Tea (provided)

A light afternoon tea will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options).

Share Table

Do you have surplus?

We encourage you to bring your surplus produce, plants, seeds, books, craft supplies, and resources to share with others at our events.

Some ideas of what you could bring include – fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey, milk, jams, pickles, preserves, jars, ferments, starters, SCOBYs, seeds, plants, seedlings, cuttings, tubers, pots, tools, gardening magazines, permaculture books, recipes, patterns, manure, coffee grounds, compost additives, worms, mealworms, wool, fabric, craft supplies, soap, natural cleaning products, plastic alternatives, produce bags – the list is extensive.

Please bring whatever you can and then take home whatever you need within our culture of generosity and free sharing

Parking

Free off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street).

Access

The venue has access for wheelchairs, walking frames, and strollers as needed. Everyone is welcome (including children with parental supervision).

Cost

• Financial Members of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. - Free
• First-time Visitors to a Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. Event - Free
• Non-Members - $10 per person
• Children attending with an Adult - Free (but please book so we know the total numbers)

Membership

Annual Membership of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. is due by 31 December each year. It's only $40 per person or $30 for a second or subsequent adult living in the same home.  

If you join now, membership is half-price (pro rata for 1/2 a year) and valid for 6 months until the end of 2023. 

Members can attend all events and workshops during the year at no cost. You can pay your membership at checkout when you book to attend this event.
