Family Day: Kurinuki Planters
Event description
Fun for the whole family! Join us for a family handbuilding workshop where we will explore the practice of kurinuki!
Kuri Nuki, meaning “carve out,” is a traditional Japanese form of handbuilding that involves shaping a solid block of clay, then carving out a vessel to create "interior space." For some it can be a slower and more meditative way to create from clay. The finish is not supposed to be refined and smooth - the more raw and sculptural the better to demonstrate the process of making.
Choose your workshop session: 11:00 AM-12:30 PM or 2:00-3:30 PM.
Workshop tickets are $45 per person ($35 for Pomona Residents or AMOCA Museum Members); registration includes instruction, materials, glazing and firing, and admission to the museum the day of the workshop.
We recommend wearing clothes that can get a bit muddy, or bringing your own apron.
All participants will be provided clay and carving tools and will be able to create 1-2 pieces. We'll fire your piece(s) in the AMOCA Studio and notify you when they're ready for pickup, usually about 2-3 weeks after the workshop.
Please arrive 10 minutes early for a fun and relaxed check-in process. Late admission is not guaranteed.
