Event description

Join Tweed Shire Council's Sustainable Agriculture Program as we walk and talk our way around Sherelle's farm at Back Creek, near Tyalgum in the Tweed Local Government Area. Sherelle has been on the property for 5 years, running approximately 25 head of livestock whilst doing what she can to maintain and enhance the farms natural values. Sherelle has been coming to grips with the challenges of being a livestock grazier on a small property in one of the highest rainfall areas of the Tweed.

Sherelle received a Sustainable Agriculture Small Grant from Tweed Shire Council in late 2023 and has also received technical support from Council’s Private Land Conservation Program. Sherelle was able to use the grant to fence off an important piece of lowland rainforest that straddles Back Creek, effectively excluding livestock from an area that has both remnant vegetation of high ecological value and areas with natural regeneration.

Sherelle places a high priority on protecting natural assets from the impacts of livestock and has also fenced and allowed the regeneration of native species around a number of farm dams. This has led to a steady improvement in water quality and provided habitat for many native species including frogs, birds and small mammals.

Come along to:

  • hear Sherelle’s story;
  • hear about the history of the farm and the area from Gary, the previous property owner and 5th generation farmer;
  • see how fencing has been used to protect high conservation value native vegetation, creek banks and dams from livestock;
  • network with fellow farmers; and
  • develop ideas for managing livestock and natural assets on your own farm.

All local farmers are welcome.

Please no dogs or other pets. This is a working farm, including dogs, livestock and wildlife.

Please follow simple biosecurity measures such as clean clothing and footwear and make sure your vehicle is free of foreign materials and seed before entering the property.

Tweed Shire Council's Farm Walk & Talks typically occur on the first Thursday of every month. For a few hours each month we showcase a local farm and the sustainability initiatives and environmental challenges that the landholders are tackling. So join us for a chance to network with other farmers and find out about some of the great projects and innovations that are local farmers are embarking on.
