Event description
Are you a market organiser or are you thinking about establishing a market here in Selwyn?
Are you interested in selling your product at a local market? Or perhaps you're keen to know about why or how they operate?
This event is open to all who would like to learn more about the opportunities in farmers’ markets. This includes producers, consumers, event organisers and members of the community.
Our speakers include:
- Jo Fountain (Associate Professor at Lincoln University specializing in food, wine and tourism) will report back on key trends and insights from a recent survey completed in March this year. Participants were asked about their experience with farmers' markets across Canterbury including what type of products they looked for and what would encourage them to return. Jo will also discuss the importance and role farmers’ markets play in our communities.
- Duncan Wilcox (one of the original founders of the Lyttelton Farmers' Market) has a wealth of experience and will be sharing some of his knowledge with attendees. Duncan arrived in Lyttelton at the end of 2002 from San Francisco where he shopped every Saturday at the farmers' markets. He was shocked to find there were no farmers markets' in the whole of the South Island. So he decided to start one and partnered with Project Lyttelton to ensure it was community-led. The first market started in September 2005 and has now been running for almost 17 years.
- Claire Coates (Lyttelton Farmers' Market Team Leader) will also be speaking with Duncan about her involvement with Project Lyttelton and key learnings so far.
There will be an opportunity to network and connect with others who share a common interest.
Non-alcoholic drinks and nibbles will be provided. Bookings essential.
