Date: Tuesday, June 27
Time: 11:00-1:00 pm
Location: Meet at the North Hills Waterworks trailhead on Greenough Drive (parking can be tight so carpooling or alternative transportation is encouraged!)

Get a bird’s eye view of the Missoula Valley as you learn about its fascinating and tumultuous geologic history. Geologist Dr. James W. Sears will focus on the faults and floods that have shaped the valley we see today. As you travel along trails in the North Hills Jim will explain the origins of geologic features. Gain a new understanding of local topography and discover exciting details about Glacial Lake Missoula, Mt. Sentinel, and the North Hills. This is an amazing opportunity to walk and talk with Jim Sears!

The tour will travel along the Waterworks Universal Trail to the city overlook. This trail is designed for all abilities. The next destination will be the Jeanette Rankin Peace Park for lunch and discussion. After lunch, you can depart for home, or follow Jim on a hike up the hill to the old communication tower and back down through Cherry Gulch to the parking lot. This section is steeper- moderate to strenuous.

Instructor: Dr. James W. Sears received his PhD from Queen’s University, Canada, in 1979, and has taught at the University of Montana since 1982. He researches the structure and tectonics of the Rocky Mountain region. Jim has authored dozens of publications and geologic maps.

  • clothes appropriate for changing Montana weather conditions: layers, rain coat, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, good walking shoes/boots

What’s the refund policy?

  • The course fee is refundable if a cancellation is made up to 7 days before the event. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this deadline. In light of changes to programming due to novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Montana Natural History Center will make exceptions to its normal refund policy. These exceptions are as follows:
  • Any programs cancelled by the Montana Natural History Center are eligible for a full refund.
  • In the event a program fee can be rolled over to a following cycle or year, that offer will be made available to the paying program participant, and a spot will be reserved for the participant.
  • If a program is cancelled by a participant due to reasonable health and safety concerns from exposure risk to novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Montana Natural History Center will issue a full refund.
  • If any participant experiences major illness, injury, or loss of a family member prior to the start of a registered program the participant is eligible for a full refund.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Nope! We will have a list of all the attendees.
