¿¿Who Is Playing??

Fia Fiell

“Completely enveloping and effortlessly engrossing, like a warm blanket inscribed with sacred knowledge” - Boomkat

Fia Fiell is the moniker of synthesist Carolyn Schofield. She performs as a keyboardist on multiple synthesizers, playing and processing them in real time to create dreamlike and unsettling sonic worlds that meld lush melodic cycles, vibrant digital textures and soaring drones. Wielding an improvisational and elastic approach to time, space and rhythm, she creates evocative and arresting compositions that feel as powerful and confronting as they do warm, organic and intimate.

Hotspring

Vancouver-based composer, musician (and forester) Hotspring (A.K.A. Scott Gailey) makes his Melbourne debut.

Gailey attempts to create sensational tools for crossing thresholds of perception. His work explores pop, post-musique concrète, ambient composition, and psychoacoustics.

His superb 2019 album Polysensuality draws inspiration from the sublime environment that surrounds his home on the West Coast of British Columbia. Gailey explores the musicality of field recordings through various synthetic approaches as a way to access the ambiguous emotional content latent in the natural world, his work optimistically suggesting a repositioning of mankind as within the natural order; rather than superior to it.

Nico Niquo

Nico Callaghan crafts a drifting, hyperreal electronic music at the strange meeting place of jazz, ambient, and (increasingly) ghostly threads of grime.

His forthcoming album Esperanto sees the Australian artist return to Orange Milk Records six years since his album In A Silent Way, and on this new release, Nico builds upon the framework of his last two records for the label: retro-futurist synthesizer arpeggios and flourishes of New Age ambiance.

For this performance, Nico will be joined by a trio to perform selections from Esperanto.

Maria Moles (DJ)

Maria is an Australian drummer, composer and producer based in Narrm/Melbourne. Her solo percussion performances draw on ideas from the Kulintang music of the Philippines and contemporary electronic production to weave hypnotic webs from layers of unmetered pulse that slowly undergo subtle textural transformations. In collaborative contexts ranging from free improvisation, jazz and contemporary composition to experimental pop, Maria contributes an acute sense of touch, placement and timbre, unashamed virtuosity and a powerful rhythmic drive.
